Definition: Alarm type
Alarm types are templates for several alarms that are to be generated from a process variable. Assignments are configured within the alarm type, each of which links a value or a bit with corresponding alarm information. Just like the alarm definitions, the alarm information contains the alarm text, the reference to an alarm class and other parameters, but not the specification of the triggering process variable. Only by using an alarm type in an alarm definition is the assignment between the event variable of the alarm definition and the alarm information in the alarm type made. This structure allows an alarm type definition to be used several times for identical controllers, for example, which each signal different alarms by means of error codes via a process variable.
Alarm types are divided into the following functional categories:
-
Establishes assignments between bit numbers and alarm information. It makes sense to use the bit block alarm type if, for example, a system contains several identical parts whose error states are each summarised in bit-coded form in a variable.
-
Establishes assignments between numerical values (error codes) and alarm information. For example, if a controller outputs a numerical error code via a variable, the assignment to the alarm information to be displayed can be made via the numerical alarm type.
Alarm types also support the linking of parameters from the alarm definition and the assignments of the alarm type definition, such as "Alarm class", "Text", "Priority" etc.

Alarm types are templates for alarms and contain some of the same parameters as alarms, e.g. alarm class, text, priority, etc. You can specify whether the parameter of the alarm type definition or the corresponding parameter of the alarm definition should apply or whether the values of both parameters should be added together. In the case of text parameters, you can also combine texts from both definitions into one text using the @J@ formatting instruction (for an example, see Example: Alarm type bit block).
